  • I have never sewn in my life. I am very interested in making blankets with old shirts, fixing & hemming pants, making decorative pillows, and so forth. I am getting ready to buy my first sewing machine. A basic for beginners brother or singer brand machine.
I know nothing when it comes to using a sewing machine. I figured at the age of 40 I would like to know 🙂
Do you offer classes for the never ever used a machine or sewn in their life customer????
    Thank you

  • Hello,
I have a granddaughter, 9 years old, who would like lessons. I am interested in getting her a series of lessons — but the after school sewing 100 class is offered Tuesday at the same time as her Girl Scouts. Is it possible to arrange private lessons at another time?

  • Hi there! Do you have scholarships? For people, kids or adults, who want to take a class but don’t have the resources? Or other specific donation needs?

  • Hi: I have a question on camp, but I’m unable to reach you at this number 360-489-1852 (message is that number is non-working). Please respond.

  • Hi There,
My daughter Chloe has taken several sewing classes there (the crossbody bag, the doll and little creatures last summer) and would like to take the skirt class this summer for teens/tweens. Not sure if the above classes qualify as sewing 101. Does she need to take that class before signing up?

  • Good morning!

My mother and I are working on a Simplicity sewing pattern for my wedding dress and will need some advice along the way. It’s just one of the Simplicity costume patterns (I’m not really a traditional white dress kind of gal). I’ve never done anything on a machine before and my mother, while she’s made some very beautiful clothing, is about 20-30 years out from her last ambitious machine sewing project.

I’m wondering which would be better for our situation, a mentoring card or open sew card. We’re likely to need help here and there with fabric selection, pattern sizing, and final adjustments – so I was thinking a mentoring card would be best, but thought I ought to check in and get a professional opinion prior to purchase.

Thanks for offering so many great options to support creativity! I’m excited to meet your staff and get started!

  • Hi,
I am interested in having my daughter’s birthday party at Refabulous. Do you have a minimum number of kids for parties? What projects options do you have for 10-year-olds? Do you have any openings for Saturday, March 19?
    Thank you!
    Traci Bell

  • Please call me so I can arrange for a gift certificate for my daughter via credit card over the phone. She is interested in starting with the adult 102 class this week! Reach me on my cell at 248 670-8368. Thank you!

  • I have fabric for a large rectangular cushion for a motor home that I would like to sew.
I would like to have instruction on cutting the fabric, and the construction of the cushion. Would you be able to give me instruction? I am available on evenings and weekends. If it is convenient for you I could share one of your other classes. I have been sewing for years but am inexperienced in this type of sewing.
    Thank you,

  • Hi – I’ve been sewing for many years, however, I’ve forgotten some of the basics like how to correctly prepare fabric for cutting – how to fold and get it ready for cutting. I am interested in making a quilt for my bed and want to learn how to use a rotary cutter so I can cut straight accurate 2″ pieces of material. Do you offer classes, either private or group for me? thanks, Kathy

    PS. I am 60 plus years old…..

  • Hi Kamuela,

I just registered Yitagesu for the after school sewing again for a Xmas gift because he was interested in the next class. But now I’m not sure that was the right thing to sign him up for. I know he’s interested in learning to make some clothes but probably not a kimono or tshirt skirt. Let me know what the best thing for him to do next would be.

  • Hi!
I talked to you last week about a birthday party on December 12th for Harper Nelson. I will try calling as well this week but we looked at the activities and she really likes the owl so I think we will do that. Do I pay after the party depending on how many people show up or prior to the party? My phone number is 360-480-5506. thanks so much.

    Sara Lawson

  • Hi!
We are i terested in doing a eight year olds bday party at refabulous december 12th. My number is 3604805506

  • Wondering what options for Nov 24th in the afternoon to bring my daughter and 3 friends to celebrate my daughters birthday. They have a 1/2 day of school and I thought we could do a project in the afternoon. A friend recommended I check in a refaboulous.

  • Hi there! I am a self taught amateur sewer looking to learn some best practices and vocabulary. I have been sewing for about 9 years but have never taken a formal sewing class and like the idea of taking some classes. Do you have many men take your classes? Would you recommend starting in 101? I would like to learn as much as possible so I was aiming to start from the beginning.

Anyhow, thank you kindly for your time!

    All the best,

  • Hello! I’m looking for someone like you to teach sewing projects at our summer camp. The refabulous theme totally fits into our school’s mission of nurturing creativity and environmental stewardship. I realize that you’re based in Olympia so the commute to Seattle would be too much for you. But do you happen to know anyone in the Seattle area who might be interested in this opportunity? We’ve offered a DIY Fashion class for the past few years and are looking to start a DIY Crafts class. You can read more about our summer camp on the link above. Hope to hear from you soon!

    Thank you!

  • Hi, can you tell me what time your October sewing 201 Thursday evening classes begin and end?
Also, I assume the sewoly kids classes (I’m looking at the Whale on October 17) does not require prior sewing experience? I have an almost 7 year old who would love it, but she’s not some more than a few stitches for fun.

  • I have a 10 needle embroidery machine for sale. Wondering if you’re interested to buy or is it ok to post on your board or website. I have thread, extra attachments and all the pieces, plus it’s only 4-5 years old and new since Indisnt use it much. I’m retired now and would like someone else to use it.

  • Hi, I need to have some alterations done on a few items. Do you have that service available?

    Debra thompson

  • I received an email receipt for $140 for a summer teen class that I did not purchase. It appears that it was for a Holly Blue. What is your email? I will send it to you.

  • Hello!
I have a broken sewing machine…seems the bobbin is stuck and eating up my thread. I am very new to sewing and don’t know how to go about fixing it. Any suggestions about where would be a good place to take it to get it fixed? Thank you!

    • Hello Mindy,
We have a fabulous machinist who fixes things just like this! Molly Casey is in our shop most Thursdays from 2- 6. You can even leave your machine here for her to look at when she comes in if you can’t make the thursday time.
let us know how we can help further

  • Hello,

When we spoke on the phone you noted changes in the schedule & to look online at the calendar. It is bland for April. Would you let me know if there are changes?

  • Can you help someone create there own pattern? I know what I want it to look like but Can’t find anything. Thank you Dana

  • Hello,
My grand-kids have enjoyed the Make It Together classes a lot! I wanted bring my grandson the the Shark class, but we couldn’t do the last date. Do you know when you’ll do sharks again?

    • Hi kitty
We will be doing the shark again on May 9th – 10:30 -noonish. Hope you and your grandson can make this class.
      have a fabulous day

  • i would like to sign up for the March Friday class. When I tried to pay for the class, the website charges $160.00 ($30 for the course and $130 for shipping) as opposed to the $130.00 listed on your website. Could you please clarify.

    Thankyou for your time.

    • Jeff thank you for spotting this wordpress coding mishap. You are right it should not read as it was.
I got it all corrected and you should be able to enroll for the class – no shipping fee required.
Hope to see you in class,

    • Open Sew Hours
our open sew hours switch with the seasons : currently we have Tuesday 2-6 (Lanita is the instructor for this open sew) , Thursday 2 -7 and Friday 2 -6. Open sew is really just space to sew, there is no real instruction going on. We will help get you un-stuck if something goes wrong with the machines but for the most part you are on your own. And, if you are under 14 a parent need to stay with you, just in case.

  • Hi! I have a group of Girl Scouts who want to learn how to sew with their sewing machines. Could you contact me so we can discuss the possibilities? Thank you!

  • Hello,
We are excited for you to return to Oly. Abby would like to keep taking classes. Lots and lots of classes. I noticed on your website that the classes all focus on making clothing. Do you have any classes Abby can take regularly that make non-clothing options?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Karen & Abby Buckley

    • these are our non-garment classes:
      non- garment classes:

      Make it together:
This series of classes is designed for a young creative (5-11) and an adult to create together. Think of it as making memories one stitch at a time! Classes are simple and everyone walks out Sew Happy! These are hands sew classes. We offer a ‘Make It Together’ class most every Saturday: 10:30-12:30pm.

The SEW OLY creative sew class meets about once every 2 months. The projects are usually beginner to beginner advanced and often not garments. We make house hold stuff, fun things and occasionally a doll. These classes are held most of the time on Thursday evening

Sewing techniques: this class meets once every 2 months – we tackle a new sewing technique – adding a skill to our sewing that might not show up in the projects you are currently making. But once you have there skill they a reason to use it pops up more often. This is an evening class – usually Thursday evenings.

SEW OLY KIDS: This is a kids toy making class. We make stuffed animals mostly but it is a lot of fun. the kids tend to be between 8 and 12. It meets on Saturdays once a month.

  • Hello,

I was wondering if any of the 1 day project classes would be appropriate for Abby Buckley?

    Thank you.

  • Hi! We’re interested in having an Ugly Sweater making program here at the Lacey Timberland Library and are looking for an instructor to demonstrate basic hand stitches for applique and embellishment. Would you be interested? We have a variety of dates available, but were hoping for a Saturday, maybe Nov. 22? Thanks.

    • Hello – my name is Kamuela, I am the owner and lead teacher at ReFabulous. I love this idea – but you know MAKING an ugly sweater is a lot harder then you think – we all have a leaning towards beauty! But I am interested in helping you try. give me a call at the studio (360) 489-1852 and lets talk about details
      thanks for thinking of us,

  • My wife is a pretty accomplished seamstress and makes lots of horse show clothes for our kids and grandkids so I bought her a “starter” serger. She was wise enough to want lessons before she starts it up. I was wondering what the cost would be for your lessons. We live in Chehalis so I would need to factor in potential times also.

    • Mike
so your wife is ready to serge – she will see her sew times speed up and once she gets past the threading learning curve things are lots of fun. We charge $30 an hour for private classes, and our “learn to use your serger” classes are all one on one. The best ways to start is with an hour or an hour and half to tackle the treading issue and then I send her home to practice and play, if after that she needs more we can work out another class. I have some open hours in the mid-morning starting at 10:30. We could do this next week Weds Sept 24 or Friday sept 26. If either of those days don’t work I have the sames start time available for the Tuesday – Friday the week of Oct 14 – 17 (the big gap is because we are putting on a fashion show Oct 12 and there are so many things to tend to the 2 weeks before – I might have opens days the week of the 28th but wont know until the middle of next week) I hope this helps – please feel free to give us a call at the studio if you would like more details and to talk times (360) 489-1852

  • Do you offer any serger sewing classes? I have had a serger for a while but having a hard time figuring it out. Thanks, Cindy

  • My daughter is almost 7 and completely in love with the idea of designing clothes. I am not a skilled sewer, but I would like to offer her the opportunity to cultivate this skill. Do you offer clothes sewing classes or lessons for kids? I’m so excited to have found this website!

  • Hi Kamuela!

A few years ago you had talked about doing a class for bloomers to wear under skirt with ruffle trim. They were made from an old slip.

Can you do that class again? I have a few friends, plus me, that would attend. 🙂

    • I love teaching this class – and I love my bloomers – I wear them under skirts all the time.
If you have 5 or more people interested in a class we can set a private class that works for your group.
I am thinking I will offer this class again June 26 at 6:30 -9pm
Wear it Today: Bloomer Class $40 Lets have fun with summer!
In this class we are making an awesome pair of Bloomers – better than your grandmother’s bloomers, ones so cute you want to show them off, just a little. We will be making them out of knit, nylon or cotton – your choice – and they can be as long or as short as you want; these are designed with your JOYFUL dressing in mind. You will love these so much – really you will – that you will want to make more. I have 3 pairs – all fabulous colors. If you think you saw a spot of purple under my skirt, you did :).
This is a Beginner level class: You can sew in a straight line most of the time. You’ve taken a class or two and are starting to feel comfortable with the machine — you know what seam allowance is, maybe you’ve sewn a little on your own, but you still need a little help with remembering how to thread the machine and wind a bobbin. The prerequisite for any Beginner class is a Sewing 101 class or equivalent. This level is not for people who have never used a sewing machine before.

  • Can you confirm the cost for Sewing 101 starting in June and that you are open on Monday nights?
I see conflicting info on the web page!
    Thanks Ladies!

    • Hi,
To answer your questions about the sewing 101 — cost is $130 and it is on Monday – I like to teach these beginning classes in times when the studio is not open for general use; it lets me really focus on the students in class without distraction.
If you have any other questions feel free to call (360) 489-1852 or ask away here, I will do my very best to get back to you quickly either way.
      owner and lead teacher (re)fabulous

  • Hello,
a good friend of mine has told me wonderful things about your sewing studio. I volunteer as an English language teacher for the CIELO project which just relocated to nearly across the street from you at 1202 Black Lake Blvd. Among the programs CIELO offers (ESL, GED, computer literacy, counseling services in Spanish, etc.) they also have a sewing group and provide sewing instruction in Spanish. They have very able instructors, but use borrowed space from the neighboring office and have to set up and take down their sewing supplies each time they meet. I’m wondering about the possibility of a beautiful partnership between CIELO and (re) fabulous? An opportunity to stich two communities together and make something even richer and more beautiful? Let me know if you would be interested in talking about this idea. Thank you. – marie

    • Marie,
I look forward to chatting with you soon. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet one of your teachers this weekend. kamuela

  • Is it true you have a sewing machine repair person there on Thursday afternoons? I also heard there is a great selection of vintage machines for sale! Can anyone come talk to your mechanic? Maybe ask about a machine misbehaving? Do you teach newbies how to use their “new to them” machines? I also heard you have really good espresso drinks!

  • Hi, I am writing a holiday gift guide for Olympia Power and Light. My deadline is this Saturday Nov 22nd. It’s last minute I know, but do you have anything you would like to tell me about special things your business offers for the holidays? Thanks,
    Gio Marcus

  • I just discovered that you used COLOR as the ‘selection’ identifier to link blah blah blah. That is the ONLY invisible negative concerning your overall Fantastic web site, which overall is very well done, very. Any use of COLOR as a ‘function’ is based on superstition.

  • Free sewing machine. I have a sewing machine I would like to give away. It is a Kenmore solid state, 35yrs old with all the attachments. Does zigzag, button holes, and fancy stitches like the hem stitch. It has a minor glitch that you can work around simply. I have enjoyed using it all these years. Good machine for someone who wants to sew at home. I live in Olympia.

  • Hi! I am looking for a beginning sewing class for my 9-yr-old daughter. I see you offer a tween after school class started in the Fall. Anything for a bit younger? Thanks!

  • Will you be offering the Beautiful Scarf class sometime soonish? I love the ruffles and want to make one for myself and for everyone I know for Christmas. thanks!

    • We are offering that class this month see below or at our website
      thanks, kamuela
Make it /Wear it: Beautiful Scarf
      Wed, August 21, 6:30pm – 9:00pm
This scarf is fabulous for the end of summer. This scarf is made from woven fabric – no stretch – think light wools, and cottons, in great colors and/or prints. I love this scarf, it’s pretty, 2 layers of ruffles and a little tie or button. Think a little pop of color and fun.

Materials: a piece of fabric 60″ x 20″ or a yard and we will piece it together and thread to match. Remember this will be touching your neck so make sure it is soft enough for your tastes. These are so great you can make a whole set of them to wear and share! This is a great gift – remember Christmas is only a few months away.

we are also offering the following scarf class
Make it Wear it: Infinity Scarf
      Mon, August 12, 6:30pm – 9:00pm
This scarf is so fab the only thing that will get you to give it up us love. (HINT: it makes a great Holiday Gift) Its wraps around two times and look soft and beautiful. We are making it out of fabulous sweaters – think soft fuzzy wool blends or meltingly soft cashmere.

Materials needed: This is a save the plant one sweater at a time project – super green!
2 sweaters – think soft and fluffy or roll around in it soft – we need two because we are blending the colors to create an amazing look. If you don’t have two sweaters to transform we have lots to choose from in the studio – priced just perfect.

  • Hi! I took your May 101 and LOVED it 🙂 and now I’m ready to buy a machine! I’d like to buy the same as in your studio. Can you me the model number please? Thanks, Sabine

  • I was just looking for local places that offer alteration services and (re)Fabulous showed up on a couple directories. Do you really offer alterations? If so, I’ll come by to talk with you. If not… when will you do another class on altering skirts? From time-to-time I have items that need to be altered and I’d love to learn to do it myself, but my sewing skills are very rudimentary. I can make a mean elastic waist skirt or pants out of solid color. woven fabrics. Beyond that, I’m really not very good. I have lots of motivation and interest, but need guidance and practice. Looking forward to hearing from you

    • Yes we do alterations – We will be back in the studio this Tuesday, give us a call anytime after 3pm and we can set up a time for you to come in and get thing fit. Our next alterations class – we call these the mending basket- July 11 we are tackling dress fit – but you are welcome to bring in your skirt to work on in that class. here is the link to the Mending Basket classes.
hope to hear from you soon.

  • Hi am new. And this is kinda weird .was looking up patterns for a new wardrobe for myself that I am about to begin work on. Thinking about what I needed, selecting patterns that are easy fast, retraining hands that haven’t designed in a while and pricing sewing machines selecting a style or a look that could work for me at this age and your store came up solving basically all my thoughts and conjoling the melancholy whim of summers in my youth away from the usual of the day crafting in the days of renaissance lore-the Artisan, the guild………on Saturdays sitting around like guild women drinking wine,(ginger-ale for me) Eating, cake, pies what ever the Saturday fridge availed and people brought in and crafting in many different, tapestries , clothing, etc in many different stages and talks on fabric and which country looms the best. Then catch times in my twenties stealing off, away to create or just dabble without avarice……

Okay that all said, do you provide seeing machines or do we bring from home, I read that there are stations and crafting tables and piecing and using boards. Do you also help with a pattern. I have been sitting here trying to remember how to alter a pattern if its just like Two sizes off ie enlarge when the pattern does not sell in ones size. My grandmother taught me with grocery bags, yet it’s the darts and the front being off that I am worried about. Also, do you have dress forms?(if needed)

Finally, where are you located. Ie where exactly on Black Lake-public transportation are my wheels so just trying to figure out stops, length if travel etc.

    • The short answer is yes – to it all – Your narrative made me laugh I look forward to meeting you. We have patterns – we can help with pattern fitting – sizing up and down – we have sewing machines – old and new. We have scissors and great tables and a merry gaggle of dress forms in a few sizes. No need to bring the shopping bags (I use to use them too) we have pattern paper that is so forgiving it will make you swoon. Our Open sew times are listed on the website. As the bus goes we are just down from the mall stop on Black Lake – behind Outback and Black Bear diner in the back – you cant miss us there is a huge heart on the door – it just calls you in. we open at 1pm Tuesday through Friday and 10 am on Saturday stop by take a look. have a fabulous evening kamuela

  • Hi there! I have a voucher to come for a class. It expired on 5/31/2013. Am I still able to use the voucher and come in for a class? Thank you very much for your time.

  • Hi Kamela,
I am really wanting to come and make your knit skirt on skirt Saturday, but the Olympiad is the 11th! Are you offering it on June 1st, or is that a different skirt Saturday class?

  • I have purchased many polyester fitness tops (nike, adidas, etc) that fit me in the torso but are way too long. I have ruined a few trying to hem them on my basic machine. Do you think serge hemming is the answer? If so, do you offer any instruction/access to serger for this? I have never used one. Help:-)

    • Mary we have big plans for April and May and all that we gathered idea wise at the Sew Expo. Hope you will join us for the fun.

  • I bought two vouchers for a Make It Together class through Amazon Local a few months back. I need to sign up for the class, but haven’t been able to reach you through the phone. Do I just show up some Saturday morning, or do I need to reserve space in a class first?

  • Not sure if this is an unusual request: I’m looking to test out having a piece of fabric embroidered with my name to test out if I like how it looks to see if its something I want to pursue further. It is for a work uniform/apron. Is there a charge for this? Is this possible? If so, should I bring in the item/material I would like to test out? How many letters could I have stitched on? I’m looking for six letters total.

  • My mother-in-law gave me a real nice fabric steamer in great shape. Is this something your business could use? It is a nice steam fabric press you may be able to use on small pieces of fabric for your projects. Would you or your students have use for the steamer?

    • Hello Penny – if this offer is still out there- we love donations! We will even buy you a Latte for bringing it to the shop. Thanks for thinking of us, kamuela and the gnomes

  • I would LOVE to make a hat from recycled sweaters. I thought I saw that project last year. Any chance you have an upcoming class on that?

      Friday Nov 9 2:30 – 5pm
      Weds Nov 28 6:30 – 9pm
      class description:
love the look of this hat – so cute and so fun and a little flirty – You just want to toss it in the air as you twirl (yes, I grew up watching Mary Tyler Moore and dreaming of living in the Big City). This hat is a version of the French Beret but with a little more ease and softness – thinking soft and fuzzy French Beret, you know no attitude just the pretty. materials:SUPER GREEN this hat takes one felted but still soft sweater and thread to match. You are welcome to shop here at the studio if you can’t find your perfect felted sweater at home. This hat is a great holiday gift for you 😉 or a dear one.

  • Hi Kamuela,

I would like to sign-up for a sewing class and include one months membership through your web page. However, I don’t know how to add the membership fee to my shopping bag.

    Please advise. Thank you.

  • Hi Kamuela,

I am planning a flight home to MN and am looking for help with travel garb to help reduce the impact on my fragrance and chemical sensitivities. I have carbon fabric and carbon ‘blankets’ to use as starting material, and a basic ‘headscarf’ I devised years ago from the carbon fabric which had limited usefulness. First I want to be kind to my body and give it the protection it needs; secondly, I want to look good – not like some hopelessly bizarre medical ‘victim’ or nut case. Naturally the materials are black to gray since they are full of carbon so hopefully we can think of ways to add some color and beauty without setting off security alarms! Are you up for it? I’ll forewarn you that I have absolutely no talent or skill in this area; on a REALLY good day I can sew on a button! 🙂 Let me know if there is some feasible arrangement we can make. Peace and blessings, t

  • Hi! I purchased a (re)Fabulous 90-minute Parent/Child Creative Workshop for Kids under 8 voucher off of Livingsocial. I would like to redeem this with my 7-year old soon… I looked over your calendar, but I’m not sure which classes this voucher can be applied to. Can you help me? I would love an evening workshop, if possible. Thanks!

    • Hello Ricki

  • I have been sewing at Refabulous since November 2011. While I have a sewing machine at home I so much more enjoy sewing at Refabulous among the talented, eager and friendly folk who inhabit the shop. Kameula is a sparkling presence filled with unique ideas, creativity flowing from her fingertips! She willingly advises when asked and encourages us all with her kind words and beautiful smile! If you are seeking a congenial place to learn, work on your projects, take fun classes and make some new friends Rebabulous is THE place to go in Olympia!

  • Hi,
I am looking for some assistance in learning how to make unique fitted t-shirts. One of my hang-ups is that I don’t own a serger. Does your shop have a serger?
Do you have any suggestions of where I might go to learn pattern alteration or pattern design? I know the basics of sewing already – but I would like to learn some fitting and design.
    Thanks for your time!

    • Adia,
Yes my classes are fee based. All the costs are on the website next to the classes. Perhaps you could ask your case manager to look into funding BHR may have for classes like this. If so, have your case manager give me a call and we will see if we can work something out.

  • Hi, Kamuela.

Will you be offering summer “camps” for children, and if so, do you have dates and times yet?

    • Sarah
Our summer camps are going to be FABULOUS this year – I am so excited about getting to play and be creative in such fun ways. All the summer dates are now on the Web site under Summer Programs. To sign up for a camp or an intensive just give us a call at (360) 489-1852
      Have a fabulous day!

  • I need a space to sew a boat cover. I’m wondering if there is room at (re)fabulous to work on such a large amount of fabric without getting in everyone’s way. The cotton canvas sections I will be sewing are 120″ [yes, 10 ft] wide and up to 6 yards long.

    • After writing my original comment, I drove over to (re)fabulous, got a tour (and an excellent latte) from Kamuela, and signed up for my first month’s membership. I’m looking forward to working on my big fat boat cover with an espresso bar in the immediate vicinity!

  • I have a sewing project I am working on. And will need some guidance since this is my first big project. How would I be able to get some help just with this, without taking a class? Would a membership cover that?

  • Just found out about your studio; At last, a place where people who sew can get together. Can members bring their own sewing machines?

  • I’ve done a bit of sewing with my rather basic machine. I’m trying to learn more about the machine and want to make a coat from unique materials. Do you have sewing lessons?

    • We offer sewing lessons of all sorts for those new and experienced in the sewing game. Our basic sewing 101 will give you the skills and confidence to get sewing after only 4 short weeks. We also offer classes that will guide you through a simple skirt or a comfy pair of pants, as well as more advanced classes that are designed to help you ‘play’ with fabric, fashion and your own sense of style. Check out our calender of classes and stop by we will be happy to give you a tour of the shop and answer any questions you might have. 🙂
