you will learn in Sewing 101:

  • use a sewing machine
  • trouble-shoot simple machine issues (that happen all the time)
  •  make a variety of finish seams
  • sew a buttonhole and button
  • make and use a simple pattern
  • fabric facts
  • the mysteries of thread choice
  • the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of sewing supplies
  • repurposing tips and more

After three weeks you will go home knowing your way around the sewing machine, with a simple market bag you designed in hand and ready for Sewing 102: Working with a Pattern.

Sewing 101 classes includes a 6 hour punch card to get you in the habit of sewing and thinking about making what you long for!

What you need for  the Adult Sewing 101 class:

Much of what you need for this class is already in the studio. We have machines and all the sewing tools you will need, HOWEVER if you have a sewing machine you would like to learn to use, please feel free to bring it with you.  If you do, please bring everything you got with it: sewing feet, all the plugs and cords and the instruction book.

Repurposing is a huge part of what I do at (re)fabulous and it is my hope to show you that there is unused fabric everywhere in your life.  To that end I have lots of repurposed fabric in here in the studio, most of which is free to Sewing 101 students.

Here is what we are going to be doing in Sewing 101:

  • Week 1: how to use the machine  — we will learn to use the basics of the sewing machine and do some practice stitching that is both functional and fun.   Next we will learn a few finish stitches (these are the things on the inside of your clothes).
  • Week 2:  We will use the stitches we learned to make a simple market bag.   If you bring your own fabric you will need 1 yard of cotton or cotton blend – no stretch, please.
  • Week 3: We will finish the bag.  You will go home as “one who sews”.

About the author

    • It is helpful if you enroll, or at least let me know you are intending to be a part of the class at least a week in advance. I close enrollment at 10 students in each class and sometimes they fill.

  • Hello! This looks like a great class and I would love to take it! But, I have class in the morning when the Monday classes are. Do you offer any classes in the afternoon or evening? For the Friday classes it says it’s in the evening, but it then says it’s from 10 am to 1 pm. Thanks!

    • Molly, I have made a typo on the website – just fix it – thanks for pointing it out “:)
our Monday class sewing 101 is an evening class: Class runs 3 Monday Evenings April 21 – May 5 6:30 – 9pm
Hope to see in enrolled, have a fabulous evening

  • Hello, my 9 year old daughter and I would like to take a class together. Do you accept children.

    • Hello Kara
We do work with kids all the time. We have Saturday morning handwork classes called Make-it-Together,, that are great a morning of sewing together fun. If you are looking for something on the sewing machine (instead of handwork) our creative Sew OLy classes are great. Our next one is April 17, 6:30 – 9pm Bits and Pieces Wool Pillow Cover. If you are looking to take a beginning Sewing Class like our Sewing 101 we don’t offer a class that combines a child and an adult, but we could work out a private class if you were interested. Give us a call (360)489-1852 and we can talk out the details.

  • Hi,
I am a beginners, I know nothing about sewing. I wanted to learn how to make dresses and among other things. But my problem is where to start and about measurement. Where to begin body measurement and to how to layout on materials. I need a 101 sewing lessons even if I have to pay a private tutoring.

    • Margie,
Not to fear we will teach you everything you are hoping to learn int he Sewing 101 class!! We cover machine use and trouble shooting and by the end of the class you will have made a bag and know how to use the machine. When you are done with this class you can move right into the 102 where we learn about body measurements, fabric facts and work with a commercial pattern. Our classes are low stress / high fun – We are going to have a great time. kamuela

  • I thought I should check in. I had planned to start my 101 classes today but really want to learn to use my own machine. Apparently it is not in stock and I will not get it for a week or so. With that said, I have signed up for the Nov. classes instead. Hope that is okay. See you then. Lynn

  • I sewed as a teenager and made curtains as an adult. I got really out of touch with sewing and bought a new sewing machine, thinking that would get me back into it. No, that didn’t work. Refabulous, and Kamuela’s highly knowledgeable and fun guidance has gotten me super excited about not only sewing, but sewing as a creative act. The studio is just great too because it has all the tools and huge tables that you just don’t have at home. The other aspect about Refabulous that I love is that it is a place to connect with others that share your passion. Thank-you Kamuela for creating community through your fabulous classes and studio!

  • Hi,
I am fairly new to sewing; I grew up making blankets and stuffed animals out of scraps but forgot those basics! I am very interested in your sewing 101 class but with my schedule and times you offer, I won’t be able to take classes until the school year ends the third week of June. Will you be offering sewing 101 between the end of June through end of August? I also wonder with my minimal skills if I would be out of place for the class making pillowcases for Mary Bridge children until I get more basics?

  • I would love to see you offer this class again, asap. Also wednesdays do not work for me but I really want to learn how to sew. Will you be teaching this 101 course again soon?

    • Yes we will be offering a Sewing 101 again very soon. The next Sewing 101 Class runs April 13 – May 4 it is a Friday morning class 10:30am runs til 1pm. I offer at least one Sewing 101 a month so if this one does not work for you anther will be coming up soon. The other option for sewing 101 is to take the teen class it meets on Saturdays 3 -6pm runs 3 Saturdays in a row and is offered just about every month. the next class starts April 7 – 21. (this week sat). If you have other questions give me a call at (360) 489-1852. Thanks kamuela

  • Hi, I am brand new to sewing and am very excited to begin learning. My husband bought me a great sewing machine & now just need to learn how to use it!! I saw the 4 week class you offer but clearly, I’ve missed the boat plus the time (6:30 to 9:30) doesn’t work for me. That’s basically the only family time we get plus we live all the way over in Lacey. I typically work 9a-1p. Do you have any group classes either on the weekend OR in the afternoon? Thanks!

    • Kelli
I just saw your post here – forgive the detail on getting back to you. I also offer a Friday morning class it starts at 10:30 runs til 1pm. I see that that does not work for your work. The other option for a sewing 101 is to take the teen class it meets on Saturdays 3 -6pm runs 3 Saturdays in a row and is offered just about every month. the next class starts April 7 – 21. (this week sat). If you have other questions give me a call at (360) 489-1852. Thanks kamuela
